WEYBURN – The Weyburn Review and Weyburn This Week newspapers were named as finalists in the 2023 Better Newspapers competition by the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association.
In the General Excellence awards category, the Weyburn Review is a finalist for Best Front Page, Best Editorial Page and Best All-Round paper, while Weyburn This Week is a finalist for Best Editorial Page in their class.
Weyburn This Week is a finalist for Best Special Section, for the “On The Farm” section published in 2022.
For Premier Awards, the Weyburn Review is a finalist for Best Saskatchewan Recreational Story for Greg Nikkel’s story, “Dungeon Master finds running role-playing game highly rewarding”.
The story shared the passion of Ian Isaak for Dungeons and Dragons, and the connections he was able to make through running the game.
Nikkel is a finalist for Best Healthcare Coverage Series, for a series of stories, “Organizers hope for ‘sea of green’ with Weyburn mental health initiative”.
The stories shared details of the door hanger initiative to promote mental health resources available in Weyburn and area.
The Review is also a finalist for Best Habitat Conservation Writing for Nikkel’s story, “Students have opportunity to see fish hatch and grow in classroom”.
The story detailed the Weyburn Wildlife Federation’s program to raise fish eggs in two classrooms, before the baby fishes were released into Rafferty at Mainprize Regional Park.
The winners will be announced via an online award presentation on Friday, May 12.
