WEYBURN – City of Weyburn staff are hard at work getting outdoor community ice surfaces ready for the winter season, once colder weather returns.
“Although the Outdoor Rink at the Credit Union Spark Centre has enough ice in it to skate on, with warmer weather we are asking patrons to please stay off the area until we announce its official opening,” said Ryan Dale, manager of leisure services. “We are hoping with colder weather that it’s soon.”
The outdoor rink is located on the east side of Credit Union Spark Centre. It is accessible, free of charge, outside at Jubilee Park or through the Spark Centre indoor change room designated for outdoor rink access.
Scheduled times of availability, such as public skating and open ice, will be available on the City website after the official opening. Users must bring their own equipment; pucks are only permitted during designated open ice hours.
Crokicurl will be located along Fifth Street, in front of the Sun Room at the Weyburn Leisure Centre. Members of the Weyburn Agricultural Society are assisting City staff, helping to set up the frame and flood the ice.
“We anticipate, weather permitting, that Crokicurl will be ready for the community before the Christmas break,” said Tina Clay, program manager. “This new location in front of the Leisure Centre is more accessible and a great opportunity to showcase the game.”
Equipment is available in a bin near the ice surface and rules of the game will be posted at the facility.
Crokicurl is free of charge and funding was provided by the Weyburn Agricultural Society and South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District (South East District).
Official opening dates will be shared on the City of Weyburn website, through City social media channels and with local media.
