REGINA — Some major closures and restrictions are coming in the next few days in connection to the Winnipeg Street Overpass project in Regina.

Chris Warren, director of Roadways and Transportation for city of Regina, said they had reached “a major milestone in the Winnipeg Street overpass project — deconstruction of the existing overpass.”

Major road closures and restrictions will be required from Sept. 8 to 12 to safely demolish the overpass and complete the paving work.

Free flow of traffic on Ring Road will be kept in place by using the new and existing on and off ramps. The Winnipeg Street crossing over Ring Road will be closed during this time.

Access to all existing activities and businesses in the area will be maintained, said Warren, and drivers looking to cross Winnipeg Street over Ring Road will be detoured. “Please watch for signs and plan your route ahead of time,” said Warren.

Here are details of what to expect over the coming days, according to the city’s news release:

Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6 a.m., the eastbound Ring Road exit ramp to Winnipeg Street will be closed for paving of new lanes for approximately 24 hours. Eastbound Ring Road traffic wanting access to Winnipeg St. will be detoured to McDonald Street.

From Friday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m., to Monday, Sept. 12 at 6 a.m., demolition of the existing overpass will begin with the following restrictions and detours

  • Ring Road traffic in both directions will be detoured using existing off ramps and newly constructed on ramps to Ring Road.
  • Winnipeg Street will be closed over Ring Road. Drivers needing to use Winnipeg Street to access businesses and activities will experience significant detours and should plan ahead.
  • Alternative routes to cross Ring Road include McDonald Street or Broad Street.
  • 9th Avenue North will be closed to through traffic at the tracks as crews complete paving on this section of road.

The new overpass will be open to traffic on Monday, Sept. 12 with most of these restrictions removed. Eastbound Ring Road traffic, however, will be unable to turn left onto northbound Winnipeg Street and be detoured for the next four to six weeks while the new exit loop ramp is completed. Any changes to the schedule and any future restrictions will be posted as work progresses.
