The Weyburn Beavers have continued their early-season trend of up-and-down play. During a seven-day stretch from June 10 to 16, the Beavers played five times, winning twice and losing three times. The wins were 7-6 in extra innings over Lethbridge on June 13 and 4-3 over Yorkton on the 14th. Two of the losses were in tight games: 6-5 to Regina on June 10 and 5-4 to Lethbridge on June 12. The other loss wasn't close - a 16-7 defeat at the hands of the Melville Millionaires on June 16. Weyburn led 5-4 after seven innings, but Melville scored 10 runs in the eighth inning, and tacked on two more in the ninth, to rout the Beavers. On a positive note, Grant Malm hit a solo home run in the second inning against Melville, and Kilby Perdomo hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning - the Beavers first home runs of 2010. Weyburn's visit to Swift Current on June 15 was rained out. The Beavers were scheduled to play in Regina on June 17. (Results of the game were not available at press time). Weyburn's record at the quarter-point of the season is 5-6. They are third in the East Division, three-and-a-half games behind the front-running Red Sox. Infielder Derek Wallace has been among Weyburn's top hitters early in the season. He has multiple hits in his last five games, and he has four doubles, six runs and eight runs batted in during that five-game span. Radville's Taylor Van de Sype has been the starting catcher in the last five games. He has had five hits in his last six at bats. Two pitchers provided stalwart efforts in the victories. Dillon Yeaman pitched eight innings against Lethbridge and surrendered four runs. Julien Soucy pitched a complete game in the victory over Yorkton. The Beavers will visit Moose Jaw on June 19 and Melville on June 21. Upcoming home games are on June 23 against Yorkton and June 24 against Melville. Game time for both contests is 7 p.m.
