MOOSOMIN — Well, Moosomin almost had their chance to catch up to those Big 6 League leading Redvers Rockets, but once again, another Sunday snow and ice dilemma cancelled those plans. Better to be safe than sorry, word that the contest was officially nixed came the morning of Sunday, Dec. 15.
Regardless, it was a full weekend with five games throughout the southeast, kicking off on lucky Friday the 13th with the Oxbow Huskies claiming their second win in as many games against the Carnduff Red Devils. It was an explosive contest in Carnduff with the Huskies eaking out a 3-2 victory after 60 minutes.
Elsewhere in the league on a superstitious Friday night, the Carlyle Cougars played host to the KW Oil Kings, but would not let their visitors leave with a parting gift. The Cougars secured a 7-3 win.
The following evening noted three games, a huge 7-1 win for the Red Devils as they completed the second of two home games, this time with the Midale Mustangs coming to town. The Redvers Rockets played host to the Cougars, who were fresh off their win at home and looking to build on that lead.
This would prove to be a tight contest, with the Rockets taking a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes (goals to Kenton and Naton Miller). The Cougars matched those points in the middle frame, with lamplighters from Josh Romanyk and Brett Turgeon, but Redvers’ Preston Kopeck would narrowly reclaim the lead for a 3-2 score after two periods.
Kopeck would return in the third to bring Redvers a fourth goal, and Carlyle’s Romanyk would add another twine-tickler, but as the seconds counted down, no other scoring would come from either side, making the 4-3 Redvers lead a final score.
Meanwhile, the Moosomin Rangers ran to visit the Wawota Flyers, with a strong start from both sides. Wawota would kick off scoring early in the game, thanks to a goal from Nico Muskego at the two-minute mark. Moosomin’s Dustin Fisher would answer the call later in the frame, then Taylor Sanheim would bring the Rangers a 2-1 lead early in the second frame. Not to be out-done, the Flyers tied the game again a minute later with a biscuit in the basket from Devin Stewart, but that seemed to be where Wawota’s luck ended. Moosomin would add four more goals courtesy Phil Fath, Brad Cole, Carter Sawchuk, and Jody Boutin, going home with a 6-2 win over the host Flyers.
At press time last week, the red-hot Redvers Rockets led the league with 16 points and a 7-0-2 record, followed closely by the Moosomin Rangers, who trailed by two points in the standings with a 7-1 record. Carlyle rounds out the top three with their 6-3-1 record, and the Carnduff Red Devils follow at 6-3.
The bottom four teams are the Oxbow Huskies at 5-2, the Midale Mustangs with a 2-6-1 record, the KW Oil Kings hold onto their one win at 1-7-1 and the Wawota Flyers are still searching for their first win with a 0-7 record.
