The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs football team has won the biggest game in the 11-year history of the program.

The Elecs blanked the host Moose Jaw Peacock Tornadoes 23-0 Saturday afternoon to win the Moose Jaw High School Football League’s Tier 2 title. This year marked the first time that the league has had separate Tier 1 and Tier 2 divisions.

“I’m really proud of the group,” said Elecs coach Mark Schott in an interview with the Mercury. “They worked hard and played an excellent game.

“A large part of this group has been together for quite a long time, through minor football and multiple years with the Elecs. I’m just happy for the team that they got this result and this championship and we’re really proud of what our team accomplished this year.”

ECS jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. They scored a touchdown on their opening possession on a play in which the ball went through a defender’s hands and to Elecs wide receiver Chase Martel, who went on to score a long touchdown.

Ilya Korita kicked a field goal on the next possession. Neither team scored the rest of the first half.

The Elecs added to the lead in the second half on a naked bootleg run by quarterback Kaleb Bechtold and a score by running back Jonah Bachorcik to round out the scoring.

The defence forced numerous turnovers, with interceptions, fumble recoveries and third down defensive stands in the mix.

“Our defence was phenomenal. They held Peacock in check until our offence could get rolling and we were able to put up some more points in the second half,” said Schott.

Tier 2 was for the teams that finished in fifth to seventh place in the league. The top four teams were in Tier 1.

Also on Saturday, it was announced that Hunter Eagles had won the league’s defensive MVP, as voted on by the league’s coaches. He is the first-ever Elecs football player to win an award that is voted on in the league.
