WEYBURN – The historic Mcleod Series of basketball games between Weyburn and Estevan will be a go this year, announced the Weyburn Comprehensive School on Sunday.

“We will be restarting the tradition on Feb. 7th in Estevan, with the boys playing at 5:30 p.m. and the girls playing right after. Both schools will be charging a small gate fee to enter,” said Weyburn coach Jody Kerr.

The Weyburn leg of the series will be held at the Weyburn Comp Eagle gym the week of Feb. 12-15, with the exact date to be announced on Feb. 11, once the next dates for teachers’ job action is known.

The cost will be $5 for adults, and a charitable food donation, and students are $2 and a charitable food donation. Food donations will be taken to the local food bank.

Some points from the past, include that the historic series started in 1931, and there were no games in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 2020-21 (due to COVID) and last year, in 2023, as the competition was cancelled due to “heightened emotions”.

The record currently stands with Estevan with 39 wins, and Weyburn has won 47 times.
