ASSINIBOIA - Matthew Drewitz and his team comprised of Michael Hom, Carter Parenteau and Jared Tessier from the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon captured the Canadian Under-18 Mens’ Curling title on May 7 in Oakville, Ontario.
Matthew is the son of former Assiniboia resident, Orlo (Karen) Drewitz and grandson of the late Art and Doreen Drewitz of Assiniboia.
It is the first time a Saskatchewan team has won the Curling Canada Under-18 event since the events’ inception in 2017, and also the first win by a Saskatchewan team at a national junior curling championship since 2011 when both Braeden Moskowy and Trish Paulsen won Canadian Under-21 titles for the province.
The 2020 and 2021 Under-18 events were both cancelled due to Covid and the 2022 event, which had originally been scheduled to be held in Timmins, Ontario in February 2022, was also postponed and was therefore rescheduled to Oakville. The event was expanded to 21 teams for both the boys and girls divisions, with several provinces being awarded two representatives.
Drewitz advanced to the play-off pool after finishing first in round robin play in their pool with a 5-1 record. In quarter-final action, Drewitz needed a draw to the button in the final end to defeat Manitoba 5-4 . Then, after an 9-3 semi-final win against Ontario, Saskatchewan faced Nick Mosher from Nova Scotia in the Canadian final.
Tied at four in the last end, facing two opposition stones, Drewitz hit and stuck a rock back button to claim the Canadian championship.
Saskatchewan’s second boys representative, Braeden Heistad from Avonlea/Regina Highland finished in 11th place overall. On the girls side, Savanna Taylor from Saskatoon finished in 18th place while Saskatchewan’s second girls representative, Elizabeth Kessel of Regina Highland/Balgonie, finished in 9th spot overall.
Alberta’s Myla Plett captured the Canadian Under 18 girls title.
