ASSINIBOIA - The current 2021-22 curling season is officially in the books. The Assiniboia Curling Club endured a great but challenging year with all the COVID twists and turns.
The 2022 Scotties held in January will no doubt be the highlight, its success, and all the tremendous support they received. Our leagues all wrapped up their playoffs, and March featured three bonspiels.
The Seniors Master Cash took placer on Saturday, March 5 with six teams participating. A great day of fun and participation was had by all and the day concluded with a nice meal served by Darlene and Shai.
The Ladies Annual took place on March 11 and 12. With 12 teams entered, it led to a full day and half of fun and activity. Its success can be measured by all the positive comments from many of the participants who don’t regularly curl during the season. The aching muscles will soon heal and be ready for another run next year.
The Men’s Annual concluded the season from March 18 to 20. There were 22 rinks that took part in this year’s event with Jamey Jordison emerging as this year’s champ on Sunday evening with a victory over the Tom Mountain crew to earn the Nelson GM title. The Dale Berner foursome won the Southland Coop “B” Event, Jeff Jorga won the Richardson Pioneer “C” sponsored Event, and the Travis Eldstrom squad captured the E. Bourassa “D” Event.
The Curling Club thank our many sponsors for the the above including Nutrien Ag, FMC, Syngenta, Potentia Energy, Assiniboia Livestock Auction, Bamford Construction, Crossroads Construction, Young’s Equipment, South Country, Paterson Grain, and Frosty’s Kitchen.
The Monday Night Travelling League, with six teams in the pot, (sponsored by Southland Co-op and Westmoreland Poplar River Mines) concluded on Tuesday 15 with Ron Lucas, Lane Jepson, Corwin Jepson, and Wayne Giraudier (Leah Harper in final) defeating the Al Batty rink with a last rock victory.
The Thursday Night Competitive Rec League and its 14 teams (sponsored by Richardson Pioneer), was also won the by a Ron Lucas led team which included Lane Jepson, Leah Harper, and Candice Mowbray. They defeated the Brent Blackwell team in the final. The Brian Embury crew, Carter Lewis rink and Talsa Warken team were other draw winners.
Thus, another season is complete, despite the many obstacles we faced. All and all, it was a very rewarding year, and we look for ways to increase participation in our club. Don’t be afraid to suggest changes.
A concerted effort will be made to increase junior curling numbers in the coming season!
One last “thank you” to the many Scotties and bar volunteers, and business sponsors for their signage. Their support truly makes the Assiniboia Curling Club as successful as it is!!
Until next season, have a great summer!!
