Weyburn pickleball player wins gold, bronze at provincials

WEYBURN – Weyburn pickleball player Deana Mainil attended the Saskatchewan Pickleball Provincial Championships from June 9-11 in Warman, and came home with three medals.

It was the largest pickleball tournament in Saskatchewan to date with 303 registered players.

The tournament was all indoors at the Warman Communiplex, held on 15 courts with an additional four practice courts.

Mainil played Women’s Doubles 4.0 skill level (age 50+), with partner Zsuzsa Papp from Saskatoon, on June 9. There were five teams in their category, and they went undefeated to win gold.

On June 10, she played Mixed Doubles for the 4.5 and over skill level (all ages) with partner Brian Mayrs from Warman.

There were four teams and they played a double round-robin, and came out with three wins and three losses.

Since they tied for second with wins and losses, they used the points total of the two teams to determine which team played for gold. Mainil and Mayrs were five points short, so they played for the bronze medal and won.

Mainil then played Women’s Singles, for the 3.5 and above skill level (all ages), on June 11. There were four competitors in her division. They played a double round-robin and she went completely undefeated to win gold.

The gold medals will allow her to register early for the Western Canadian Pickleball Championships, and the nationals, for 2024. This summer, Mainil will be playing in Westerns on July 6-10 in Medicine Hat, Alta., and at nationals, set for Regina on Aug. 23-27.
