Weyburn powerlifters win gold and silver at World Classic

Powerlifter Marnel Spencer won gold, and Heidi Fowler silver, at the World Classic in St. John's, Nfld.

WEYBURN – Three members of Weyburn’s Olympia In Depth Powerlifting Club were able to attend the 2022 IPF World Classic and Equipped Masters Powerlifting Championships. Athletes Marnel Spencer and Heidi Fowler, along with coach Ryan Fowler, headed out to St. John’s, Newfoundland, last week.

Marnel Spencer competed in the 47 kg equipped division with a gold medal finish. She had a world record squat of 118 kg, bench press of 65 kg, and deadlift of 127.5 kg for an overall total of 310.5 kg.

She also placed second overall in the Masters 3 division across the weight classes, which is a calculation based on bodyweight and overall kg lifted.

Heidi Fowler placed second overall in the 84+ equipped division in the Masters 1 category. After a missed first squat, Fowler came back to have a successful second and third finishing with a 165 kg squat.

She had a bench press of 135 kg and a deadlift of 160 kg, which were both personal bests. Fowler’s total of 460 kg was enough for a silver medal finish.

Both lifters' success and placing contributed to Canada finishing first overall in the Masters 1 and 3 categories in Team points.
