WEYBURN - The Weyburn Red Wings won their game over the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night, and lost their match against the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night to split their weekend matches.

“Just since I have played with the Red Wings, we have had a solid group of players. I look forward to winning a few more games,” said Shayde Peterson, 20-year-old forward with the Red Wings. “Every night is a battle, there is nothing easy, but I still think we are the team to beat this year.”

“Some of the other teams are looking good so far, but I think we have a strong group and will have a chance to win games,” said Ethan Whillan, 19-year-old forward.

“I am looking forward to us making a run for the playoffs,” said Drew Kuzma, 18-year-old centre for the Red Wings.

“I am happy to be part of a good organization, with good fans, and I hope that we have a good run for the season,” said Luke Schaeffer, 18-year-old defenseman.

As the Red Wings recently held some time on the ice with younger players in the community, “it is also important for us to be good role models for other hockey players,” added Schaeffer.

On Saturday, the Red Wings were blanked by the Mustangs 5-0 as they could not solve their goaltender Steven Bacovsky. Weyburn’s Joseph Young was in net for the full 60 minutes, facing 34 shots, while Bacovsky had 19 shots on net.

The Mustangs were one for eight on the powerplay, while the Red Wings were 0 for seven chances on the powerplay.

On Friday, it was a different story, as the Red Wings doubled up on the Hawks 4-2, with the first two goals for Weyburn coming in the first period.

Austyn Hansen scored at 11 minutes to put Weyburn on the board, with assists from Nicholas Kovacs and Peterson, and Davis Chorney made it 2-0 six minutes later, with assists from Jacob Jakusz and Nikolas Sombrowski.

Weyburn added to their total with captain Dante Ballarin scoring at 13:41 of the second frame, assisted by Sombrowski and Jakob Kalin on the powerplay, and Simon Pollock scored unassisted in the last minute of the period.

Nipawin’s two goals came in the third, from Joel Mabin, unassisted, and from Andrew Schaab on the powerplay, assisted by Braxton Buckberger.

Young was in net for the full 60 minutes, stopping 27 of 29 shots, while the Hawks had Chase Hamm in for the first two periods, stopping 17 of 21 shot, and Dylan Lacroix played for the third period, stopping four shots.

The Red Wings were in Yorkton to take on the Terriers on Oct. 19, and will be hosting the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday, Oct. 22, and the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday, Oct. 23, both at Crescent Point Place at 7:30 p.m.
