Estevan football starting to give back

Hunt will be first of many to audition for Rams

Well that didn't take long.Less than a year after Estevan Elecs high school football returned from a 36-year absence, the program already has an opportunity to start giving back.Offensive tackle Graham Hunt attended the University of Regina Rams' high school evaluation camp last week and will be making a decision shortly on whether or not to attend the team's fall training camp later this month.Hunt's lack of experience notwithstanding (last season was his first ever), Elecs head coach Marco Ricci believes Hunt would be a great fit for the Rams program.Whether Hunt actually becomes a Ram or not, it is now more than just lip service to suggest the football revival in Estevan has been a success. In the beginning it seemed like a pipe dream that a minor football program could be pieced together in just nine months.Turns out it did.The early scores seemed to suggest it might be a long, long while before any of our teams ever won a game against an out-of-town team.Turns out it only took eight weeks. The high school program was supposed to take three years to put together. It only took one.And where was the money going to come from to build the infrastructure needed to support these programs?Well, more is still needed but by and large it came. These are all important milestones but, as with any new program, they have required a lot of "take" on the part of the local football faithful. Now, starting with Hunt, and likely continuing with many more for years to come, Estevan's football community has something tangible to give back, something tangible to show all the support has been worthwhile.Without question, that is the most important step yet.***Speaking of football, Regina Minor Football has released its 2010 regular-season schedule. Estevan will field one team each in the atom, peewee, and bantam divisions, with all home games to be played at Dana Quewezance Memorial Field.
