WEYBURN - A dream job for some people would be to go travelling, and be paid for it, or at least rewarded for their efforts.
Here in Weyburn, there’s a contest on that doesn’t exactly pay you to travel, but you can enter your name for a draw for a prize, all for the privilege of being a tourist in your hometown.
The promotion is put on by Weyburn Tourism, and people are encouraged to use those phone cameras (or better yet, real cameras) and see the sights of our beautiful southeast Sask. city, or to take in community events. You can pick up a bingo card at the Tourism office, and it will give you lots of ideas and suggestions of things to see or go take photos of.
What other sights are there to see, you may ask?
First off, Weyburn is not the small town some people think it is. A small city does not top lists of “Best Places to Live in Canada” by just being a boring little town with nothing to offer.
We have parks, lots of parks and park trails. The Tatagwa Parkway can take you nearly all the way around the city (and the long-term goal is to make this a reality) and there are great things to explore along the way.
For example, for the parkway on the South Hill, starting from River Park and extending around the loop, there is natural grassland and nature, the Souris River, a cool bridge or two, and in the northwest corner of the city, there is the off-leash dog park and again lots of nature and nice views.
During hot spells, as we’ve enjoyed lately, there are two spray parks. One is at the beautiful River Park, and the other is at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot, where there is also a paddling pool. A nice playground area is near both spray parks.
There is the Leisure Centre’s outdoor pool as well, and next door is the Credit Union Spark Centre. The list of activities is extensive, and yet another park is nearby, namely Jubilee Park.
Nearby to Weyburn are regional parks, such as Nickle Lake and Mainprize, both with water bodies to swim in or go boating on, or go fishing in. Other regional parks in the area as well are at Ceylon, Radville and Oungre to name a few.
As you and family and friends visit any or all of these places, you can take photos of people enjoying themselves. If you’re able to fill out that bingo card, you can win a prize, and that’s cool!
