Donald Lloyd Pretty

Donald L. Pretty, beloved husband of Magdalene, passed away, at the age of 90, on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 after a brief stay in Weyburn General Hospital. Don was predeceased by his son, Gordon Pretty; his parents Annie and Lloyd Pretty; sisters: Muriel (Melvin) Doyle, Myrtle (Delbert) Foote; sisters-in law and brothers-in-law from the Zimmerman family; nieces and nephews. Donald will be sadly missed and survived by his loving wife Magdalene; his children: Gail (Edgar) Silljer and family: Tyler, Tyson and Kelsey; Donna (Robert) Dumont; Judy (Mel) Van Betuw and family: Michael (Allysia) and their daughter [Jane], Nathan and Jayda; Lori (Glenn) Le Drew and family: Danae and Kailee; sisters-in-law: Alice Zimmerman and Fay Zimmerman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was born at home on May 26, 1927. He was the third child of Lloyd and Annie Pretty. Don attended school at the local one-room schoolhouses at Schneider and Talmage. Upon completing grade nine, he left school to join his father working on the family farm. He grew into a tall, dark and handsome man who met the love of his life, Magdalene, at a community dance in Hume. They were married on October 18, 1952 and shortly after moved a small house onto the family farm. Don continued to farm with his father, supplementing their income by working at Weyburn Mental Hospital and delivering fuel and septic tanks for local businesses. Don shared his passion for farm life with his five children and eight grandchildren. All of them have many treasured memories. In spite of the long hours required to run a grain and cattle farm, Don had many hobbies. One of Don’s favorite places to be was the outdoors. With family and friends, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, trapping and snowmobiling. Don and Magdalene also enjoyed travelling. Favorite trips were to Nashville, Alaska, Florida and the Maritimes. In 2006, Don and Magdalene sold the farm and moved to a house in Weyburn. With the increase in leisure time, Don’s interest in reading and gardening expanded. His lawn and garden became his new “farm”. He took great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor, especially tomatoes and roses. In October, 2016, Don and Magdalene moved into Hill Top Manor. The family would like to thank the staff for their loving care. A Service of Remembrance was held Saturday, February 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at RD Family Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tim MacKinnon officiating. Honorary pallbearers were all of Don’s grandchildren. For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Donald may be made to the Salvation Army, 126 4th Street NE, Weyburn, SK, S4H 0Y1 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 917A Albert Street, Regina, SK, S4R 2P6 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK, S4P 2R3.
