Ron Schmidt, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on the evening of November 1, 2013. Ron is predeceased by his parents, Tony and Margaret Schmidt; brother, Roy Schmidt; sister, Doreen Preston; sister, Margaret, who died in infancy as well as his sister-in-law, Louise Schmidt and brother-in-law, Garry Stomp. He is survived by his wife, Rose Schmidt; son, Darren Schmidt and family (Carol, Matthew and Michael); daughter, Darla Bauche and family (Darryl, Charissa, Alexa, Ethan and Anton); brother, Lloyd Schmidt (Shirley); sister, Shirley Honig (Joe); sister-in-law, Ruby Schmidt; brother-in-law, Ed Preston, as well as in-laws, Willie Briskar (Norma), Andrew Briskar, Stan Briskar (Lauralee), Kathy Stomp and Mary Tremoyne (Danny). Ron was born in December 1932 in Horizon. After completing his education, Ron helped out on the family farm. He spent several years in Alberta working in oilfield service. He moved to Weyburn and began a career at Souris Valley that would last 37 years, working in laundry, grounds keeping and maintenance. During this time he met and married Rose Briskar in 1967. Ron and Rose started their family with the arrival of son, Darren, in 1971 and daughter, Darla, in 1973. Ron was an extremely supportive parent, being quick to help with anything from ferrying a car full of kids to a hockey or ball game, to helping as a Cub Scout leader or watching a dance performance. He was at every possible event for his children and grandchildren until his health began to fail. Ron retired from Souris Valley in 1998 and started his second career as a full-time grandpa. Rose retired in 2003 and they formed a team of the most supportive grandparents you could ask for. Ron was active with the Wheatland Senior Centre and was often found there playing cards and shuffleboard. Ron was an avid dart player and bowled earlier in life. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and playing card games. Ron was a kind and gentle man, who was loved by many and will be missed by all. Visitation took place at Fletcher Funeral Chapel from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesday, November 6. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 6 at 3:00 PM from Knox Presbyterian Church, Weyburn, with Reverend John Ferrier officiating.
