WEYBURN – Weyburn basketball player Thomas Olson, a Grade 11 student at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, has been selected to play on the Men’s U17 Team Saskatchewan, which will play this spring and summer.

In early April, he was picked to play in an All-Star event which included the top 12 voted high school basketball players from the north and south parts of the province. The game was played at Luther College in Regina.

According to his father, WCS teacher-coach Cory Olson, “Thomas performed well, getting 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in only 20 minutes of playing time, and won a skills competition at the two-day event.”

He noted Team South went on to beat Team North in triple overtime by a buzzer beater.

Team Sask will be doing about 10 hours training every weekend until the summer competitions begin.

As part of the U17 Men’s Program, they will compete at the following tournaments:
Prairie Challenge, Brandon, Man., on June 29-30; Jam on It, in Las Vegas on July 16-18, and Big Foot Hoops, also in Las Vegas, on July 18-21.

These all lead up to the 2024 National Championships for U17 Men’s Teams, to be held on Aug. 5-11 at York University in Toronto.
