SHAUNAVON — Shaunavon is participating in the 2025 Wellness Challenge, organized by the City of Swift Current. This annual event promotes healthy habits and community connection while fostering friendly competition between neighbouring communities.

The 2025 challenge runs from Jan. 20 to Feb. 16, encouraging participants to track daily wellness points in five key areas: nutrition, physical activity, hydration, sleep and mental wellness. Teams of five or more can join the fun, making this an opportunity to connect with coworkers, family or friends while prioritizing health.

Shaunavon’s Director of Wellness and Leisure Alexis Hunt provided an update on the 2025 teams, saying, “There are already four teams signed up for this year. If any individuals are interested in participating but don’t have a team, they could reach out to me directly.”

Last year marked the first year that Shaunavon participated in this healthy rivalry with the City of Swift Current who invited Shaunavon to participate in what was the city’s 12th year of the challenge. Shaunavon won the 2024 Wellness Challenge with an average of 211 points per participant with the City of Swift Current totalling an average of 179 points.

Shaunavon had 10 teams registered last year with a total of 105 participants. Last year’s teams included: Taxmanian Devils (Stark and Marsh), FLAB-U-LESS (MNP), Shaunavon Fire and Family (SDFR), Desk Champions (Town Office), Council Crusaders (Shaunavon town council), Revitalized Rebels (friends), Grey Power (GCHCC/Library/Age Friendly), PharmaFitness (Jae’s Pharmacy), afFIniTy (Affinity CU) and Aquabells plus (Aquabells). The winning team was Shaunavon Fire and Family with a final average of 242.6 points.

“We’re excited that the City of Swift Current offered to invite Shaunavon to take part again this year,” says Hunt. She adds, “It’s a great way to inspire healthy habits and build community spirit!”

Weekly prizes and a $250 grand prize for the winning team will keep participants motivated throughout the challenge. Businesses are also invited to contribute by sponsoring weekly wellness-related prizes. Sponsors will receive recognition on social media for their support of this exciting initiative. Weekly Challenges will once again be a part of the fun and will include a new ‘Pay It Forward’ challenge where participants are encouraged to help someone else through simple gestures such as offering a smile, opening a door or giving flowers.

Hunt is passionate about both physical and mental health, and explains, “It’s always great to do something as a team. It’s easier to stay accountable when you are with others and you all have a common mindset. It’s great to start 2025 with this Challenge, but I would encourage these teams to stay in touch with each other after the Challenge, too. A group can help you stay on track with wellness habits throughout the year.”

Finally, she encourages local residents, saying, “Let’s make 2025 our healthiest year yet and show Swift Current how Shaunavon rises to a challenge!”
