ASSINIBOIA — Amy Hansen is organizing a Parkinson’s Superwalk event in Assiniboia.

“This is a great event to bring awareness to Parkinson’s disease,” Parkinson says.

“It is put on by Parkinson’s Canada every year in September all across the country. My stepdad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2017, which was my inspiration to start doing this great event.”

Hansen learned of the event through the Parkinson’s Canada website, and attended her first event in Moose Jaw in 2019.

While pandemic-prescribed restrictions prevented public gatherings, Hansen said she began doing her own super walk in her own way.

“In 2021 I decided to do a fundraiser at Stride studio and we had a group do a spin class and raised funds at the studio. The following year I began doing the walks in Assiniboia.”

Even though the walking groups have been small in past years, Hansen says she is hoping the more the event takes place, the more awareness it will bring.

Sept. 8, participants will gather at 1 p.m. at Central Park downtown in Assiniboia.
