MORTLACH — Students at Mortlach School were treated to an unforgettable experience when Guinness World Record holder Rob (Frisbee Rob) McLeod recently visited the school, captivating students with his frisbee prowess and motivational messages.

McLeod, a Calgary-based motivational speaker and frisbee ambassador, holds 13 Guinness World Records, including the farthest flying disk throw caught by a dog at 122.5 metres (402 feet) and the longest time for a flying disk to be aloft before being caught by a dog at 10.59 seconds. He also holds the record for the most drink cans hit with a flying disk in one minute, 28, and the longest time a flying disk is aloft before being caught on ice skates (14.14 seconds).

His visit to Mortlach School was a standalone event aimed at inspiring students through physical activity and personal development.

“Frisbee Rob’s presentation was well received. It was engaging for all grades,” said Evan Hanson, principal of Mortlach School. “Students are still talking about the event and have been practicing their new skills with frisbees.”

The day began with a school-wide assembly where McLeod emphasized perseverance, learning from failure, and the importance of believing in oneself.

“Frisbee Rob started the day off with an… assembly… and some very cool frisbee tricks,” Hanson said. “Then he spent the day putting on classroom workshops, (with a focus on) building skills.”

McLeod’s interactive workshops taught students a few frisbee skills, all while encouraging them to challenge themselves. The hands-on nature of the workshops allowed students to engage directly with McLeod, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm for the sport.

According to Hanson, McLeod’s core message was to “believe in yourself, persevere, and chase your dreams.”

The unforgettable highlight of McLeod’s assembly was when he nailed a frisbee shot clear across the gym and into a basketball hoop at the opposite end, causing students and teachers alike to erupt in applause. McLeod’s next world record attempt will involve throwing a frisbee the farthest distance into a basketball hoop — but that’s still in the works.

“The students thoroughly enjoyed the day with Frisbee Rob,” Hanson said.

Frisbee Rob’s visit to Mortlach School showcased the school’s dedication to creating enriching opportunities that spark new interests and help students build valuable life skills beyond the classroom.

His visit also aligned with his broader mission to promote physical literacy and mental resilience among youth. Through his assemblies and workshops, he aims to inspire students to pursue their passions, embrace challenges, and develop a growth mindset.

McLeod is the co-author of “The Davy Rule,” a children’s book featuring his canine teammate Davy Whippet. The book teaches lessons on acceptance, kindness, determination, and self-awareness, further reflecting his commitment to youth development.

McLeod’s world records can be found on page five and page 89 of “Guinness World Records 2024,” published by Guinness World Records and available at all major bookstores.
