'The Grind' snowboarding event brings excitement to Regina

Fourteen competitors competed in street-style snowboarding, with the winners in the top two divisions taking home $6,000 each.

REGINA - The most anticipated event of this year’s Regina Frost, 'The Grind,' which is part of The Grind Series, had spectators in awe throughout the weekend.

'The Grind' is a street-style snowboarding event that took place over two days, with 14 competitors in the event. Of those 14 athletes, a majority of them were Canadian.

As for the competition, it was split into two divisions, where men competed in one and women in the other. On Friday, each competitor participated in the qualifiers. The qualifiers seeded the participants in the main event on Saturday.

On the men’s side, competitors were bracketed one through eight for the first round. For the females, the top two seeds automatically made it into the second round, while seeds 3-6 competed in the first round.

Based on the seeding, two competitors would go head-to-head and have three chances to perform a trick to impress the judges.

After those three tricks, whoever impressed the judges the most between the two competitors would move on to the next round.

The final results saw Keenan Demchuk win first place on the men’s side, taking home $6,000. Meanwhile, Adel Talyspayeva won first place for the women’s side. Additionally, second and third place in each respective division also took home cash.

There was also a Best Trick component to the event, where whoever performed the most impressive trick would win $3,000.

For the men, Joshua Lebrun took home that prize, while Sophia Bruck collected it on the female side. In total, seven competitors split the $30,000 prize pool.

With all the hype about 'The Grind.' It’s unclear if the event will return to Regina next year.

As for The Grind Series, it will head to Whistler, B.C., in the spring.
