MOOSE JAW — Moose Jaw’s own Scott Benson Band is celebrating a major milestone with its hit track “Requiem for a Dream,” which reached its 10-year anniversary this year and has amassed over 100 million streams and half a billion views on TikTok.
The band, consisting of five members from Moose Jaw — Scott Benson, Jared Robinson, Jared Dormer, Cam Church, and Andrew Fath — is now marking the occasion by releasing “Requiem for a Dream: Rewired,” featuring one remix by award-winning Australian DJ TyDi and one by Jared Robinson.
“We’re really excited that the song has been doing as well as it has…,” said Robinson, the band’s producer, pianist, and orchestral scorer. “And so we thought, let’s do something special for our fans and supporters, and launch a 10-year anniversary with a couple of new versions.”
One of those rewired versions comes from electronic artist TyDi, who has produced international hits in the electronic dance music (EDM) genre. Robinson said the band reached out to potential collaborators and TyDi responded with enthusiasm after sampling the piece.
“He heard the song himself and thought he could do a good job on the reimagining,” Robinson said. “So, yeah, things moved forward really well.”
The remix will be joined by a second reimagining produced by Robinson himself — introducing a notable shift from the band’s usual style.
“It’s a… departure from what I normally produce with the band, which is a bit more of a cinematic dubstep sound,” Robinson explained. “It’s something quite different from what we have released in the past… just to float a couple other (ideas)… and see what we can make of it.”
As proud representatives of their hometown, the band is honoured to represent Moose Jaw across the globe.
“Moose Jaw has been so good to all of us,” said Scott Benson, the band’s violinist and one of its founding members. “We were all raised here, and we really feel like it’s our home. It’s an honour to represent Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and Canada every time we step onto the international stage.”
Looking ahead, Benson said the band is already working on some new material.
“We’ve started working on a new album of original music,” he said. “We’re hoping to release it late this year or early next year. It’s nice to be back in the studio, and we’re excited to share even more new music with our fans.”
None of the members expected Requiem for a Dream to go viral.
“It was a huge surprise when we found out it has been used in Conor McGregor’s fight promo videos,” he said. “Then we started seeing it in TikToks, professional sports videos, even in wrestling promos in Mexico. It’s just incredible how people resonate with this version of the song.”
The track’s success has reached global charts and now the band is bringing it new life with the two upcoming remixes.
“After some of our music started taking off in other countries, we took that as a prompt to get together and start working on some new stuff again,” Robinson added.
The band’s breakout success introduced its full catalogue to new global audiences, and Robinson said the group is grateful to all its supporters.
“We’re extremely grateful to all the people that have latched on to the single and for finding our other works through the success of that single,” he said. “Just when you think that things are cooling down a little bit, it seems to get used in some other kind of television program or starts trending again on TikTok. We’re just thrilled that people have enjoyed listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.”
For now, the band is gearing up for the release of Requiem for a Dream: Rewired, set to drop on Friday, April 25. The release will be available on all major streaming platforms and YouTube.
