MOOSE JAW — This Mother’s Day, the Stray Cat Rescue and Protection Society (SCRAPS) is honouring the nurturing spirit of mothers — both human and feline — with a heartfelt raffle fundraiser supporting its vital work in the community.
The draw will take place at the SCRAPS 9-Lives Boutique on Saturday, May 10, with proceeds directly benefiting the non-profit organization.
“We’re basically just recognizing and celebrating moms, and all the people who nurture us,” said Anne Marciszyn, a long-time SCRAPS Moose Jaw volunteer. “We’re also thinking about the animal moms out there who are dedicated as well to nurturing and caring for their little babies.”
Launching just in time for the spring kitten season, SCRAPS Moose Jaw has curated a gift collection valued at over $1,000 to raise funds for its trap-neuter-release (TNR) program that helps manage and care for community cat populations in the city.
The raffle includes a wide range of donated items from generous local businesses, such as a handcrafted quilt from an anonymous donor valued at $450, a “Coffee with Cats” basket, a Celtic Heart gift collection, With Intent candle, and a spa package from Sahara Spa.
“It’s going to be a quick draw for a wonderful item to hopefully win for mom or somebody special who cares for us,” she said.
With the arrival of kitten season, Marciszyn said the need for TNR support is urgent.
“There just isn’t enough homes for all of (the cats and kittens), and it doesn’t matter how hard we try,” she said. “The main goal is just reducing population so that the ones who are there have a better chance of a better life.”
SCRAPS Moose Jaw is using the event not only to fundraise, but also to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. It’s a message the organization continually promotes as part of its broader mission to improve the welfare of stray and feral cats.
“We like to always stress our thanks to the community,” Marciszyn said, noting that SCRAPS Moose Jaw’s graphic designer Christine helped create posters for the event and the Moose Jaw Express donated a portion of the cost to print materials for the non-profit. “Again, (I want to extend) a huge thank you to all our supporters who donate to our organization… and (who) support us with a lot of the events that we do and help us with… our mission.
“(I would also like to add) the very important message to spay and neuter your pets,” she added.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at several participating locations, including SCRAPS’ 9-Lives Boutique, Pet Valu, DDK Pets, Vintage Vixen Hair Studio at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, and the Excalipurr Cat Café in Regina.
