Canadian Football League athletes are making their final preparations before training camp, which opens in less than a month. Their approach at training camp can vary from year to year and player to player.
CFL pass rushing great Charleston Hughes was on the SportsCage.
“I approached every training camp the same way, where I went in to dominate every single player that I played against, every single player that I lined up across from. I lined up to dominate and show them who I was, or the type of player that I was at that time.”
The 14-year pro Hughes admitted that he would pick his spots in camp after he established himself.
“If it's a veteran player, like veteran against veteran player, I won't go 100 miles an hour like that. I would tone it down a bit, just because I know we need those guys for the season. But if it was a rookie, it's lights out.”
That thinking would indicate an unwritten code like we’ve heard about in hockey. Hughes admitted that it does exist.
“Oh yeah, it's the same thing in football, man. If somebody like Dan Clark told me, Hey, bro, chill out when you're coming at me, I'll tone it down when I'm coming at Dan Clark, and I'll just throw a move and try to beat him, and if he grabs me, I'll shut it down. But if it was like a rookie or somebody like, you know, Ferland. Logan, who was more of a younger guy when I played him, oh, I'm going straight at him.”
