Dave Balon is a Saskatchewan born hockey player from Wakaw who went on to great success in the NHL, spanning a career through the 14 years, 1959-1974. He passed away in Prince Albert in 2007.
Balon’s career ended when he retired due to a multiple sclerosis diagnosis
Classic Auctions says it is honoured to present the Dave Balon personal collection, as a featured auction in Feb. 2025, open for bidding until Feb. 18. On Feb. 17, Balon's Stanley Cup ring lot was up to $4,028 in bids.
This collection comprises 19 exclusive lots offering a rare glimpse into the career of two-time Stanley Cup champion, and four-time NHL All-Star, Dave Balon.
Balon played with Prince Albert in the Sask. Junior Hockey League before turning pro in 1958. His impressive NHL career included highlights such as two Stanley Cup wins, including assisting Henri Richard’s cup-winning goal in overtime in 1966.
Following his MS diagnosis and pro hockey retirement, Balon turned to coaching and spent several seasons as head coach of the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos.
Marc Juteau, Classic Auctions, says, “Merlin Morin contacted us stating that he had an interest in placing part of his collection at auction so we started discussions with him.
From Balon’s personal collection, the auction will include game worn memorabilia, personal keepsakes and historical artifacts such as his 1965-66 Stanley Cup Championship 10K gold rink won with the Montreal Canadiens.
Other features include Balon’s 1971 NHL All-Star game, East Division All-Stars, game-worn jersey and team photo along with Dave Balon’s Stanley Cup Trophy 10K gold charm on 10K gold chain
Items will be sold to the highest bidders.
Each item from this collection carries a deep connection to Balon’s storied career with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver Canucks. This provides a perfect opportunity for collectors and hockey history enthusiasts.
Classic Auctions acknowledges there has been good interest in the Balon collection so far and expect more bids coming up closer to closing date. Juteau also adds that past experience shows the last few days and hours of bidding are always the busiest.
“We have a huge database of very serious collectors who have placed bids with us in the past, we also promote heavily within social medias, specialized sites, groups, etc.,” adds Juteau.
Classic Auctions was established in 1995.
