Losing a loved one can be one of the hardest passages in your journey through life.
Thankfully, a local, family-run funeral home can help ease the way with a personally tailored celebration.
“We essentially have our family serving other families,” says Shannon Leson, who along with his wife, Shawna, runs Leson’s Funeral Home in Canora. “Being a husband and wife team, we show compassion. We have children, are family-oriented, and deliver a service in a very caring and compassionate way.”
That also includes going above and beyond taking care of all the details required to make the service as simple and easy to arrange, so grieving families can focus their attention on each other as they honour and celebrate the life of their loved one.
“Basically, we try to make things less complicated for the families,” says Shawna. “We want them to know we are here to assist and guide them through the entire process and try to meet all their needs from pre-need/at-need to after care.”
Leson’s Funeral Home offers support in many ways. For example, a Purple Shield representative is available to assist with insurance designed specifically for funeral expenses, notary public services and grief therapy are always readily accessible, and assistance with monuments for a loved one’s final resting place is also available.
“No one service is exactly the same,” Shannon says. “We encourage families to celebrate the individual in the way they would have liked, to aid in their own healing process.”
Oftentimes, that includes a healthy dose of humour.
“That happens more often than you might think,” Shannon says. “Humour is a form of grief therapy, in my opinion. And essentially it’s a celebration of that person’s life, so there have been many times when a person has been remembered in a humorous manner.”
Recently, Shawna, who is working on her Masters in grief counselling, became a certified celebrant, meaning she can provide services to families who maybe don’t have a church connection, affiliation or are simply looking for a more personalized service.
“We are so appreciative that families are putting their trust in us,” Shawna says. “We’re absolutely honoured to work with each and every family.
“We do get thanks from the families for providing a service, but we don’t always get the opportunity to thank them for the trust they’ve placed inus.
“It means so much to us that they have allowed us to walk with them through this journey,” she adds.
