The current youngest standard bred harness race horse owner in Yorkton who got his start when he was 12 years old is Levi Morin. Currently a 15-year old student in Grade 10 at the Yorkton Regional High School, Morin is a hands on owner. He works as a groom for trainer and driver Brian Gray performing all the tasks required to prepare a horse for the races. He helps to harness horses, feed them in the evening, and do whatever else is necessary.
Morin got his start in standard bred racing when his uncle gave him a horse as a gift several years ago to get him started in the sport. Morin decided he wanted a better horse. He bought Stagger Lee, his current horse, in Edmonton to replace his first horse.
His dad, Yorkton Exhibition general manager Shawn Morin, has always had horses, says Levi. As a result he has always been around horses which attracted him to harness racing.
Morin suggests he's content to remain a groom and possibly own horses, but claims he has no ambition to become a trainer or driver.
In selecting Gray to train and drive his horse for the past two years, Morin looked for someone who was calm with horses and just treats them right rather than over reacting and being rough with the animals. "Brian's an awesome driver," Morin declares.
Harness racing isn't an inexpensive sport, Morin admits. But, Stagger Lee's performance on the track has made him enough to keep going for awhile. He's content with one horse as two horses become more expensive to campaign, he states.
In addition to harness racing, Morin is a hockey player. He's attended the Harvest hockey camp, taken part in the Moose Jaw Warriors camp and the Yorkton Terrier camp. Hockey's probably his main passion, he suggests. He first choice would be a hockey career, Morin closes.
