THE YORKTON PEE WEE GRIDDERS put another notch in the win column on Saturday, beating the Regina Minor Football Rams 24-16.

The Yorkton Pee Wee Gridders have continued their winning record, moving to 4-1 in the season. The latest win for the team came at the expense of the Regina Minor Football Rams.

Solid play all around lead to the Gridders victory, with the end score being 24-16 over the Rams. Coach Jason Farrell says the team was working together well throughout.

"The biggest highlight for me was the ability of the team to focus and have a good flow in the game," Farrell says.

The success of the year so far is due to a bit more experience in the squad and in the coaching staff, Farrell says, and he credits the area talent with putting it over the edge.

"Simply put, we've got a lot of very talented young football players in Yorkton."

Farrell credits cornerback Blaise Zrudlo with being the star of the game. While he played consistently throughout, Zrudlo had an interception in the game to cement his status as the game star.

"We worked on receiver coverage the previous week, and he was obviously paying attention during the drills, because all game, especially on the play where he got an interception, he was playing pass coverage as well as anyone at that level can be expected to play," he adds.

While the team has had a good year, no team is perfect and Farrell says there are some areas where the team can improve to have even more succes. Downfield coverage and punt coverage are two areas which Farrell says could use a bit of work, for instance.

"Our fundamental skills are there, now we need to work on the finer points of the game."

The last home game for the Gridders is on Saturday, September 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Century Field. Farrell says it will show just how far pee wee football has come in the past two years.
