CANORA - Cadet Maisie Kuzminski from 566 Canora, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron (RCACS) in Canora, designed and built a bed with other course cadets in Whitehorse, Yukon on Aug. 8.
Kuzminski, along with 57 other course cadets, were participating in the Survival Instructor Course at Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre (CTC) which is designed to develop specialist skills and subject matter knowledge for youth to perform the duties of a survival instructor and team leader for aircrew survival activities. As part of their training, teams of cadets worked diligently to build shelters, tools, and furniture without damaging the environment.
Kuzminski shared, while pointing at Cadet Nicoleta Gaie from 781 McCall Field, RCACS in Calgary, Alta. and Cadet Marisa Franzten from 902 Nighthawk, RCACS in Summerland, B.C. that when they arrived at Whitehorse CTC, “I knew no one, and now I have two new friends for life!” Gaie and Franzten would not have met their Saskatchewan friend without being on the same course this summer.
Kuzminski joined Air Cadets in 2023 for the unique experiences the program offers, as well as to meet new people. Since then, they have enjoyed attending a variety of activities within the province of Saskatchewan and went on to a memorable experience in the Yukon.
“I think that Cadets is a great opportunity for youth to meet awesome people, learn new skills, travel, and experience unique things,” said Kuzminski.
The Cadet Program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-19 and provides youth opportunities to develop skills that will last a lifetime including teamwork and communication. Youth who are interested in joining the Cadet Program can do so by visiting Join the Cadet Program on canada.ca.
