Local archers receive funding boost ahead of provincials

River Ridge Fish & Game League representatives dropped by Canora Composite School on Feb. 26 to make a donation of $4,305 to the NASP (National Archery in Schools Program) at CCS and Canora Junior Elementary School.

CANORA - Members of the River Ridge Fish & Game League dropped by Canora Composite School on Feb. 26 to make a donation to the NASP (National Archery in Schools Program) at CCS and Canora Junior Elementary Schools.

Doug Lapitsky (treasurer) and Brad Thompson presented a cheque for $4,305 to CCS Archery Coach Thomas Lowes, to be used for transportation costs to the upcoming NASP provincials in Shaunavon on April 12-13.

The NASP program, which is for students in Grades 4-12, presently has 15 participants at CJES,coached by Jennifer Prychak and there are approximately 50 at CCS, coached by Thomas Lowes.

Since the beginning of 2015, River Ridge has donated $24,305 to archery programs in Canora. Prychak said they are grateful for the support, which makes it possible for the NASP programs to continue year after year.

“This support has allowed us to purchase enough bows, targets, arrows and so on. We are able to provide each archer with their own bow to use for the season. There is no cost to participate in our NASP program unless archers choose to attend a competition. River Ridge’s support this year will allow us to keep the total tournament cost to a minimum.”

NASP is meant for all students. Prychak said some do it for the experience, while others set their sights on tournament competition.

“We are proud of all of our archers and their growth. The CJE'S program is at the grassroots level as archery is started in Grade 4. Most students who enter our program have no experience with archery. By following the NASP 11 Steps to Success, young students can very quickly develop into confident archers. Our hope is they continue their archery journey after they leave our doors to attend CCS.”
