Workers brave wet weather to put on Minor Hockey barbecue

Even thought it was an overcast day that included a brief downpour, approximately 400 burgers were sold.

CANORA - “We were thrilled with how things went,” said Canora Minor Hockey President Stacy Vangen, after the Canora Minor Hockey Barbecue was held on Sept. 12 outside the Gateway Co-op Food store. Vangen said the wet, overcast weather didn’t cause any major problems.

“At first the wind was a little gusty and we had one brief downpour but our work crew wasn’t discouraged.

“We were overwhelmed by the support of our community. Canora Minor Hockey always feels the people of Canora embrace us and embrace hockey.”

Vangen believes the stretch of wet weather may have actually contributed to the success of the barbecue, since harvesting was out of the question for most area farmers.

“With the rain the day before it seemed town was busy and we had a steady flow of customers. Burgers were served up fresh off the grill, as we worked to keep up with demands.”

Barbecue boss Damon Paley and his sidekick Parker Rice grilled up about 400 burgers in approximately three-and-a-half hours.

“We had so many compliments on the tasty burgers and even had some people come back for seconds,” said Vangen. “Canora Junior Elementary and Canora Composite School helped us out with preorders that we delivered to the schools as well. Gateway Co-op, Kim and the crew there took great care of us. They make hosting this barbecue fun and easy. This fundraiser is a great kickoff to the hockey season for us. We want people to know these funds help with player development, safety, and help us keep hockey affordable for our families.”

The first games of the Canora hockey season are not that far away. In fact, normal registration has already closed.

“However, we do have the option open for late registration for teams that still have space in their rosters,” said Vangen. “We have waived the late fee for U18 female registration, as we could use a few more girls on that team. If anyone is interested in registering please reach out to me (Stacy) at [email protected].”

Vangen said everyone is welcome to attend the Canora Minor Hockey AGM coming up on Sept. 26.

“We will have elections for president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. We are always looking for trip raffle committee members and have various other jobs we need help with. The board we have now is a great group of level-headed hard working volunteers. It’s been an honour to work alongside them and do the behind the scenes administration for Minor Hockey. If anyone has questions about volunteering, please reach out to me.

“We hope to see everyone at the rink this winter; 2024/25 will be an epic season for Canora Minor Hockey with all kind of excitement coming to Canora.”
