Among the youths who registered as a member of the Kamsack air cadets last week was a returning cadet who spent three weeks this summer attending a basic aviation course.

F/Cpl. Steven Guillet is beginning his third year with the squadron after having spent three weeks at the Cold Lake Cadet Training Centre in Alberta where he was instructed in the basics of aviation.

“We learned about various aircrafts, the four forces, lift, drag, gravity and thrust and types of engines including four-stroke, twostroke, turbine and jets,” Guillet said last week as he recounted the experience. “We also went flying.

“It was really fun, a great experience,” he said. “I enjoy learning about aircraft.

“We got to see an F-18 fighter jet and we watched the F-18s take off all the time.”

This summer was the second time Guillet was selected for a summer camp. Two years ago he had attended a two-week general training camp at Camp Penhold.

He said he plans to apply to attend an advanced aviation course which will be held at Gimli, Man. next summer.

A Grade 9 student at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, Guillet, the son of Mike and Michelle Guillet, says he plans to make aviation a career, although he’s still not sure if it will be with the military or commercial aviation.

“I highly recommend all youths to consider joining the air cadets,” he said. “It’s a great way to get to know people, learn about aircraft and it is especially exciting now that the squadron is planning to go on a trip to Europe in 2017.”

Among other Kamsack cadets to attend camps this summer were Ava Tourangeau, a survival course; Hayley Labelle, a staff cadet camp, and Noah Hartford, a basic sport and fitness camp.
