KAMSACK — New equipment purchased last year was used by the Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department to practice ice rescue operations.

The practice was held Jan. 11 at Midway Marina at Madge Lake following a theory session held at the Kamsack Fire Hall the previous day, said Ken Thompson, fire chief.

About 10 members of the department participated in the sessions, he said, explaining that firefighters made use of the four special “dry suits” costing $1,500 each that had been purchased by the department from funds raised at various events such as 50/50 lottery draws.

These suits arrived last March, Thompson said, adding that the new equipment included an inflatable banana boat, costing about $4,000, which can be used for water rescue.

The department held a similar course last March, he said.

With Firefighter Sherise Fountain as instructor, and Thompson as assistant, participants included firefighters Pam Rose, Cole Fountain, Makayla Schneider, Whyatt Schneider, Max Kuzminchuk, Mike Fernuik, Jordan Guenther and Mike Covic.
