KAMSACK — The Kamsack Comprehensive Institute (KCI) Student Leadership Committee (SLC) is off to an enthusiastic start this year, with over 20 students actively involved in planning events and initiatives for the coming months.
Terry Fox fundraiser planned for October
The SLC organized activities in support of the Terry Fox Foundation, with the main event scheduled for early October. In preparation, the committee sold "Awareness Shoes" for $1 each in KCI. These symbolic shoes allow participants to honor someone who has experienced cancer, with the purchased shoes being displayed on a memory board.
In addition to the shoe fundraiser, the SLC is planning to host a movie event in October. Donations will be collected, and a raffle will be held. All funds raised from these events will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.
Upcoming events and activities
The SLC is also gearing up for several other exciting events, including:
- The annual Halloween costume contest
- Spirit Days to encourage school pride and community spirit
New fundraising initiatives
This year, the SLC will introduce a new fundraising effort by partnering with Sysco. Instead of the usual Caesar Pizza fundraiser, the Sysco initiative will offer families a variety of restaurant-quality products. This will be the first time the school tries this approach, and there are high hopes for a successful outcome.
Facilities updates
Several facility projects and plans include:
- Completing the gym floor in Gym 1 over the Christmas break
- Preparing a frame for the school's greenhouse
- Improving the kitchen facilities for school lunches
In addition, the school is moving away from vending machines and will be running its own “Sparty Tuck Shop” to offer refreshments and snacks.
Safety drills and procedures
A bus evacuation drill is scheduled for October, and a lockdown practice will take place in November.
Technology upgrades and policies
The division is looking into replacing outdated smartboards, with the goal of providing each student with 1-to-1 tech support. Additionally, the no cell phone policy remains in effect.
