On August 3, Samuel Carey departed from the Alberta border on his canoe trip across Saskatchewan.The Yorkton area man is making the 1000 kilometer-plus journey down the South Saskatchewan River to raise awareness of alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic disorder that affects him and thousands of other Canadians. In June, Carey bicycled across the province in Stage 1 of what he's calling the "Alpha 1 Adventure."
The canoe trip, which began near the town of Empress, AB, represents Stage 2. Carey has experience on the water, but this adventure dwarfs any of the brief day trips he has made in the past. He is therefore taking it slow in the beginning, dedicating occasional days to rest and traveling at an average speed of about 6.5 km/h. The trip will likely last several weeks.
The fundraising component of Carey's campaign is also underway. Unsold items from his recent silent auction can now be purchased directly from http://www.arctictoboggan.com/Auction.html. Carey's novel for young adults, Bint, is for sale on the same website, with all proceeds going to fund the Alpha 1 Adventure.
