The Yorkton Arts Council is pleased to announce that the stars are in place for the 39th "Stars for Saskatchewan" concert series. "Nothing can replace the excitement of live performance!" comments Margaret Cugnet, committee chair for Performing Arts, Yorkton Arts Council. "The concert series provides an opportunity for patrons to enjoy an experience: a variety of performances in many performing arts disciplines, by outstanding professional artists." she explains.
This year, the audience will be treated to nine exceptional concerts. The first concert is September 18, with "Memory Lane" featuring Stephen Maguire. "Memory Lane" features all the classics from the 40's, 50's and 60's, complete with an eight piece band fronted by Irish-born Stephen Maguire, named one of CBC Saskatchewan's Future 40. "Jeffery Straker" appears October 24, a talented singer-songwriter pianist who hails from Saltcoats, and is now "among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music" says the Chicago Free Press. Then get set to enjoy the energy and old-time roots music of "Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys" on November 17, treating us to music and enthusiasm that "practically yanks you out of your seat by the collar."
The magic of Christmas is in the air with "Jimmy Rankin" on December 4. Besides a solo career and performing with the amazing Rankin Family, Jimmy has amassed many awards including 5 Junos and 27 East Coast Music awards. He will share seasonal selections, and favorites from his own and Rankin family music. The first concert of 2014 is "Musica Intima" (Prairie Debut) on February 1: an ensemble that is known and respected for their excellent musicianship and warm stage presence. They are a dazzling vocal ensemble!
"John Gracie", appearing on March 2, brings us the moods and the sounds of Vintage Vegas, singing the music of greats like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Backed by some of the country's best jazz musicians, John Gracie will delight us with his own special renditions of these classics. On Sunday, March 16, "Infinitus" graces the stage, a string trio that brings a new look and unique sound to polished classical works, as well as jazz, Latin, and hip-hop. Dedicated to outreach, "Infinitus" loves to include schools, nursing homes, and hospitals in their audiences.
Musicianship, artistry, and fashion combine for a memorable performance with "Guy and Nadina" (Prairie Debut) on April 14. This dazzling duo has performed across North America, with Guy Few on trumpet and piano, and Nadina Mackie Jackson on bassoon. Their show takes us on a musical journey called "Carnet De Voyages" (The Travel Book) with sparkling music and their own special personal stories.
The year winds up with "Everything Fitz" on May 6: an amazing six piece family band featuring four of Canada's finest young musicians and their parents. Old-time fiddle tradition and step dancing weave together for a wonderful stage show, combining traditional jigs, Celtic, blue-grass, swing and gospel.
Season subscriptions for the "Stars for Saskatchewan" concert series are now available at special early-bird prices. "The advantage of buying series tickets over individual tickets is substantial savings: 44% for adults, and 47% for seniors. It's like four single tickets free." says Margaret Cugnet. Tickets are available at the Yorkton Arts Council Office on Smith Street, or call (306)783-8722.
