The Canora Composite School’s junior boys volleyball team had a great match against the team from Sturgis Composite School, defeating them in three out of five sets.
According to Koren Baillie, the Canora junior Cougars’ volleyball coach, the team has been having a great year with its 13 members, Jake Statchuk, Clay Sleeva, Mathew Dmitruik, Maxwell Mydonick, Brendon Landstad, Carter Dereniwsky, Lane Zuravloff, Jacob Danyluk, William Hauber, Hudson Bailey, Jacob Gulka, Juan Mesa-Castanede and Jessie Biletski.
The junior boys volleyball team, which has not been featured at Canora Composite School for four years, has been organized for this year due to player interest, Baillie said.
“A lot of these players started in peewee volleyball with me in grades 5 and 6 and they really enjoyed the sport. Now that they are in Grade 7 and we have some older students, we were able to have enough players this year to field a team,” she said.
The Canora junior Cougars have been playing games in Norquay, with this being their first home game of the season. The team is also planning on playing games in Invermay in Sturgis before travelling to Langenburg for the conference games. The top two teams in Langenburg will advance to the East Central Junior Boys Volleyball Championships.
Baillie encourages volleyball fans to cheer on the team at the next home game held today (October 19) against Norquay and Invermay.
