Working smoke alarms alerted the resident that the kitchen is on fire.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to another kitchen fire on Friday, this time on the 200 block of Mowat Crescent. SFD Communications Centre received the call at 10:46 a.m.

This was the second kitchen fire in three days. The SFD, on Wednesday night, also helped in putting out a fire on the 200 block of Avenue T North that was caused by an unattended pot of boiling cooking oil.

To the Friday fire, three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit, and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. On arrival, fire crews encountered the homeowner standing outside indicating there was a fire in the kitchen.

Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and heavy smoke was discovered entering the side door of the house. An interior fire attack was conducted in the kitchen area and the fire was put out at 10:55 a.m.

Crews ventilated the structure and conducted an interior search of the residence. Firefighters located and safely removed two pet cats from the home. The cats were not harmed by the fire.

A Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the kitchen fire. The investigator, after conducting interviews and a scene investigation, the fire was determined to be accidental due to combustibles stored on the cooktop.

The occupant was alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms within the residence and was able to self-evacuate with a pet dog. Damage is estimated at $75,000.

SFD wants to remind the public that working smoke alarms save lives. The smoke alarms in this incident detected the fire early enough for occupants and pets to evacuate safely without injury.
