An unattended pot of boiling cooking oil caused thousands of dollars in damages.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a grease fire on Wednesday night in the 200 block of Avenue T North.

The incident was reported at 7:27 p.m. and SFD dispatched one engine and the Battalion Chief.

The fire crew, upon their arrival, was informed by the resident that a wet blanket was used to smother the grease fire.

The stove, range hood, and cupboards in the kitchen sustained significant damage.

The fire crew confirmed there were no signs of heat or smoke, and the fire was completely extinguished. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

SFD’s Fire Investigator reported the cause of the fire as unattended cooking. The fire originated from a pot of boiling cooking oil that extended to the range hood.

The Fire Investigator also noted the smoke alarms in the home were expired and not working. Damage is estimated to be $25,000.

SFD would like to remind residents to test their smoke alarms monthly.
