The Kamsack RCMP would like to make people aware of the presence of counterfeit money that has recently been passed or attempted to be passed at various Kamsack area businesses, said Sgt. Terry Wilson.
The counterfeit money that has recently been passed closely resembles a true $100 bill from a distance but upon close inspection several anomalies can be seen including:
• Poor quality paper as compared to the polymer bills now in circulation;
• Difference in size of the bill;
• Tape over where the transparent strip is located;
• Examining the transparent strip may show a different denomination on it; and
• The transparent window does not feel smooth with the rest of the bill.
The counterfeit money that has recently been passed does not have the small numbers in the window matching the denomination of the bill, Wilson said. As well, the counterfeit window has tape on the transparent window which becomes apparent just by feeling the bill.
It is important to know that any person can refuse to accept a suspicious bill, he said. Just because the bills are legal tender does not mean that someone has to accept them. “Ask for another one.”
Businesses are asked to contact 9-1-1 for immediate response to suspected passes of counterfeit money, Wilson said. Handle the counterfeit bill as little as possible and place in an envelope for retention. Please note as much information about the suspect as possible.
Anyone with information regarding someone passing counterfeit currency in the Kamsack area is asked to call the Kamsack RCMP or Crimestoppers.
