Kamsack’s Cancer Self-Help Group’s 15th annual fundraiser for cancer research was held on January 27.
Money from that event was sent to representatives of the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles, the group which includes two Norquay district women, Holly Hudye and Kelly Kim Rea, and went through the area earlier this week, marking the organization’s16th such tour.
Guests attending the luncheon, held in the lower hall of Westminster Memorial United Church, were able to choose from several varieties of home-made soup that had been made by volunteers, and selected open-face sandwiches, pickles, coffee and home-made desserts.
Tending the kitchen and helping to prepare the food were members of the Cancer Self-Help Group.
Proceeds from the fundraiser are being divided between two very worthy initiatives, said Jan Derwores, an organizer and co-chair of the self-help group. In addition to the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles, funds will be donated to Victoria’s Quilts Canada, an organization run entirely by volunteers and funded completely by donations. The organization makes comforting quilts and distributes them free of charge to people diagnosed with cancer in Canada.
“We were pleased with the community support for this fundraising initiative,” said Adeline Nykolaishen, an organizer and the other co-chair of the group. “A big thank you to all who attended the luncheon, donated prizes and bought raffle tickets.”
Draws were made for: a queen-size quilt made and donated by Bobbi Wanner of Madge Lake; a $30 gift certificate from Pheobe’s Beauty Parlour; a platter-and-bowl set donated by The Glass Door, and three packages of freshly-made headcheese donated by Glen Boychuk of Prairie Grain Bakery.
Winners of the draws were: Jackie Buchko, who is a granddaughter of Pauline Bear, the quilt; Elaine Krasnikoff, the gift certificate; Carole (Bill) Dutcheshen, the bowl set, and Terri-Lynn Andrychuk, Kathleen Gorkoff and Olga Bobyk, the packages of headcheese.
