SASKATOON — A semi-tractor caught fire on Friday morning, Oct. 21, causing the flames to spread to the adjacent structure in the 3000 block of Miners Avenue. The estimated cost of the damage is $400,000.

The fire investigator attended and has concluded the cause and origin scene examination. This fire has been deemed accidental resulting from a failure of a battery located on the exterior below the passenger door which extended to the engine and interior cab compartments.

The Saskatoon Fire Department received the call of the fire at 4:02 a.m. The first arriving fire crews reported the semi was fully involved and partially parked inside a structure whose overhead door was open.

Crews encountered heavy smoke inside the building. The automatic sprinkler system was also activated inside the building at the start of the fire, which helped control the blaze. They brought the fire under control at 4:43 a.m.

Using a payloader on site, the semi was pulled to the exterior and fire crews worked to ensure the unit was completely extinguished. No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred.

The building's sprinkler system is currently being tested by a technician in order to return it to normal operation.
