The Canora Atom Cobras travelled to Wadena on November 10 for the Wadena Panthers home tournament and came home with a first-place win, said Jeff Sznerch, coach.
The six-team tournament included: Cobras, Panthers, Tisdale Black Ramblers, Saskatoon Bobcat Devils, Nipawin Blackhawks and Humboldt Broncos
The Cobras played three games during the day, starting with a tilt versus Nipawin, said Sznerch.
“It was a real nail biter, a great game that we won 2 to 1” he reported.
Canora then faced Saskatoon to conclude round robin play, and came away with an easier 12 to 0 victory. The two wins set up the final game against the hometown Panthers.
“Our team played great and went on to defeat them 5 to 0 to win the Wadena Cup for the third consecutive year,” said Sznerch.
Sznerch said he and the other coaches were very pleased that the team received scoring contributions from throughout the roster as the tournament went on.
“The team members really bonded and played their hearts out which made it really fun,” he said. “Cody Vangen, our goaltender had two shutouts on the day which is remarkable. He finished the tournament only allowing one goal overall. I'm super proud of all the kids, they gave a great effort in all three games and were rewarded with the championship. This is a great group of kids. they played hard and had a ton of fun doing it.”
Sznerch said he believes the tournament has set a tone for the team’s season. Canora has won its only league game so far, and team members are “looking forward to continued success in upcoming games.”
