Although the weather is still hot, the hockey rinks in Yorkton getting busy again. It’s almost hockey season!

Last weekend, the Yorkton Maulers midget AAA hockey club held their annual fall camp. Players gathered to show the team’s staff their skills on the ice, in hopes of finding a place on the team’s preseason roster.

Similar to their spring camp in April, the Maulers invited younger players to take part in the ‘young guns’ portion of the camp. This allowed coaches the opportunity to check out players who would be ready for the team in the years to come.

They also had their main camp - full of players who stand a chance in making the final cut for this year’s team.

Players in both streams of the camp took part in a number of elements to put their hockey skills to the test. There were fitness tests, practices and games for the players, as well as meetings, school tours and presentations of what can be expected for players who join the club.

For the first time, there were winners of the fitness combine tests. Named after alumni Tanner Jeannot, the winner of the young gun camp’s fitness combine was Garret Ellis and the main camp’s winner was Mauler veteran Aiden Bulych.

The first preseason game for the RawTec Maulers is just around the corner. It’ll be on Sunday, Sept. 10 in Emerald Park/White City against the Regina Pat Canadians. The first home preseason game will be on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2:00 p.m. as the Maulers face off against the Tisdale Trojans.
