YORKTON - Things looked good early for the Yorkton Terriers as they hosted Flin Flon Friday.

Carter Briltz started the scoring in the SJHL game when he potted a powerplay goal for the Terriers at 17:33 of the first period. It was the lone goal of the opening frame at the Westland Insurance Arena.

The second period saw the Bombers tie things 1-1 on a short-handed goal from Ryder Ringor at 7:07, and then the visitors edged ahead at 8:25 on a Koen Senft goal.

It was 3-1 Bombers early in the third as Joey Lies scored at the 3:21 mark.

Anthony Piccininno added an empty-netter with 12 ticks left on the clock to round out a 4-1 road win for Flin Flon.

Matthew Kieper was the keeper for the Bombers facing 23-shots in the win.

Callum Creig was in net for Yorkton facing 27-shots.

Yorkton is back in action Saturday hosting LaRonge on a special night as the franchise will retire former Terrier Ed Zawatsky’s #14.

Zawatsky had a Yorkton Terrier career that left his name in the team’s record books. He holds the single-season points record with 158 points during the 1986-87 season, a year in which he scored 68 goals. His 158-point campaign ranks ninth in SJHL history.

In total, he amassed 108 goals and 133 assists, tallying 241 points over 122 games in a Terriers uniform, placing him sixth on the franchise’s all-time scoring list.

Other Terriers news

The Yorkton Terriers have announced 20-year-old forward Jeff Hammond has committed to Stevenson University (NCAA Division III) to continue his hockey journey.

“Stevenson University is the right fit for me because of their high-end business program and close distance to home,” said Hammond in an article at sjhl.ca by Blake Friars/Yorkton Terriers.

“Over the past two years, Yorkton has been a major stepping stone in my life and has helped me mature significantly,” continued Hammond.

In the article Head Coach and General Manager Emery Olauson had high praise for the Boothwyn, PA, native.

“We are proud to see the advancement of our players to their next step. In this case, we know Stevenson University is getting a special player and, more importantly, a special person to join their team, campus, and school,” said Olauson. “I have enjoyed every day over the past two seasons being Jeff’s coach, and I know he will be successful in the future—both within the game of hockey and outside of it when that time comes, too. Congrats, Jeff! Very happy for you!” added Olauson.

Hammond is third in team scoring with 36 points in 30 games.
