WHITEWOOD – More details are available about a motor vehicle collision that saw STARS respond to an area 4 km west of Whitewood along Highway 1. Just after 5 p.m. on Jan. 7, Broadview RCMP received a call about the collision, and gained the assistance of the Moosomin RCMP. The Whitewood Fire Department used the jaws of life to extract two of the six people involved in the collision, closing the eastbound lane of the highway for approximately 30 minutes. EMS from Whitewood, Grenfell and Moosomin were on scene, and three people were taken to hospital in Regina - one of which needed to be airlifted by STARS.

“Initial investigation determined a pickup truck was crossing the highway when it collided with a car travelling east on Highway 1,” said RCMP. “Two occupants of the car were taken to hospital for injuries described as serious but non life-threatening. The other occupant of the car and two passengers of the truck were taken to hospital with injuries described as non life-threatening.”

The driver of the truck was not injured, and was arrested at the scene of the collision.

Jett Lerat, 29, of Kahkewistahaw First Nation was charged with five counts operation while impaired causing bodily harm; and single counts of driving while impaired and operation over 80 mg. His first court appearance was in Regina court on Jan. 9, and will return to court in Broadview later this week.

Police also found an illegally-modified firearm near the scene of the collision, which they seized. Broadview RCMP continue to investigate this matter.
