Man charged after attempted break-in on Cowessess FN

Multiple police services called to assist after suspect ditches truck; flees on foot.

COWESSESS FIRST NATION – A Shesheep man was arrested and charged following an attempted break-in attempt on the Cowessess First Nation. Broadview RCMP received a call just after 1 p.m. on Jan. 7, and responded.

“It was reported the male uttered threats and left the area in a truck,” said RCMP in a media release. “The truck was located stuck in the ditch and it was reported the male had a firearm with him.”

The man had left the truck on foot, and other police services were called in to assist including the RPS Air Services, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Critical Incident Response Team.

Austin Bellegarde, 25, was found by police and charged with careless use of a firearm, carry a weapon for purpose dangerous to the public, take motor vehicle without consent, and mischief under $5,000. His first court appearance was scheduled for Jan. 9 in Yorkton.
