Regina police tase machete-wielding teen

Fight during Canada Day festivities sees boy arrested.

REGINA – Just as people gathered in Wascana Park to enjoy the Canada Day Fireworks, police found themselves chasing a 14-year-old with a machete.

The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. on July 1 when RPS Public Safety Unit members were alerted to a fight going on in the park.

"As police approached the location of the fight, they observed a male waving around a machete," said RPS in a media release. "Police approached the male, instructing him to drop the machete and he fled on foot towards a large group of civilians who were watching the fireworks display."

The teen continued to wave the machete around as he was fleeing police, ignoring commands to drop the weapon. Police were eventually able to subdue him using a taser.

"An officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon, which was effective, resulting in the male falling to the ground and subsequently taken into custody without further incident," RPS said.

The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, stands charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, and carrying a concealed weapon.

A first appearance in Youth Provincial Court for the teen to answer to these charges will be on Aug. 17.
