Saskatchewan has the notorious distinction of being Canada’s most spine-tingling region and has been named the country’s most haunted province, scoring 7.4 out of 10 on the haunted-meter.
“Here, the spectral veil between the living and the departed seems remarkably thin and there’s little wonder why,” said Alasdair Lindsay of BonusFinder Canada.
In the heart of Saskatchewan’s provincial capital, Regina, is The Government House said to be haunted by its ghostly former groundskeeper. Then there’s Fort Battleford, a former bastion of the Northwest Mounted Police, where strange noises and feelings of unease are widely believed to be the spirits of soldiers and the indigenous people who met their grim fate at this site, said Lindsay.
Intrigued by the supernatural, BonusFinder analyzed an eerie array of factors to find the creepiest province. They looked at the number of cemeteries and memorials, haunted locations, ghost towns and communities, the percentage of abandoned properties, and the number of spider species.
Sending shivers down your spine, Saskatchewan has 140 ghost town and approximately 12 per cent of the province’s properties are abandoned. Sask. also has the highest concentration of memorials per 10,000 residents (5,368), and one of the highest number of cemeteries per 10,000 residents (20).
Coming in second were Newfoundland and Labrador with a haunted score of 7.0 out of 10, followed by Nova Scotia with a rating of 6.1 out of 10. Manitoba ranks fourth with a haunted-meter of 5.8 out of 10, followed by the Yukon in fifth place with 5.5.
