Northeast communities acclaim some, elect some, reject some

Communities in the Northeast went to the polls on Wednesday, Nov. 13 to elect mayors and councils.

Zacharias wins mayoral race in Nipawin with 13 candidates running for six council positions.

NORTHEAST – Northeast communities went to the polls on Nov. 13 and elected new mayors and councils.  

The Town of Nipawin elected Marlon Zacharias as mayor with 710 votes over Kerry Skowronski 273 votes and Brian Starkell with 242 votes. The Town of Nipawin had 13 running for six council positions. Those elected to council are the following: 

Blair, Les – 753 votes - elected 

Stewart, Geoff 783 votes - elected 

Vik, Stacey 919 votes - elected 

Watts, Joyce 576 votes - elected 

Fast, Lisa 478 votes - elected 

Neudorf, Kylee 659 votes – elected 

Other candidates were: Belliveau, Brenda 357, Dempster, John – 280, Lariviere, Reg – 230, Lundback, Linden 376, Nycholat, Laura – 138, Seiferling, Sheila 420, Shore, Tyler 474. The Town of Nipawin saw 1230 people vote in the 2024 municipal election. 

The Town of Tisdale saw Roy Skoglund win by a wide margin in the mayoral seat with 766 votes and Devon Schwanke, 154 votes. Eleven candidates ran for council with the following being elected: 

Mike Hill – 644 votes - elected 

Dean Janzen – 733 votes - elected 

Kurt Johnson – 514 votes - elected 

Amanda Reynolds – 433 votes - elected 

Brendan Samida – 576 votes - elected 

Robin Shellito – 378 votes - elected 

Other candidates were Marilyn Baker 336 votes, Dennis Brown 364 votes, Sugrib Madhar 322 votes, Howard Saelhof 231, Pauline Dubitz 191 votes. The Town of Tisdale saw 933 voters turn out for the 2024 municipal election. 

The Town of Carrot River acclaimed Carrie Neigel as the new mayor, previously Neigel was a councillor. Carrot River saw 228 voters come out to elect a new council. The following have been elected to town council: 

Andrew Kavanagh 153 votes – elected 

Chris Bergen 201 votes – elected 

Donald Anthony 145 votes – elected 

D. Scott Debienne 104 votes – defeated 

Evan Wolowski 209 votes – elected 

Kendall Friske 182 votes – elected 

Neal Wasko 158 votes – elected 

Defeated was D. Scott Debienne with 104 votes 

The Town of Porcupine Plain elected a new council as follows: 

Darin S Derenowski, 117 votes 

Craig Kriger, 153 votes 

Bob Nicholson, 148 votes 

Brock Riley, 142 votes 

Darwin Thorpe, 119 votes 

Karen Wick, 140 votes 

Other candidates were: George Kays 27 votes and Don Ross with 87 votes.

The Town saw 179 voters in Porcupine Plain. Porcupine Plain acclaimed Nicholas Wood as mayor for another four-year term. 

The Town of Hudson Bay saw previous mayor, Betty Lou Palko, acclaimed as mayor. There were eight running for six council positions. The following have been elected: 

Tim Bank 347 votes – elected 

Meagan Dickson 271 votes – elected 

Brent Dyck 380 votes – elected  

Dean Hanson 352 votes – elected 

Sherry Pylon 282 votes – elected 

Kelly Stonehouse 302 votes – elected 

Other candidates were: Randy Anderson with 97 votes and Alexis Armit with 216 votes.
